I have never read a book which was written by Shakespeare in the original, and watch a movie, but I vaguely knew about the story. I watched this DVD alone at the library, but I could not concentrate on it because I had the gripes!
There were 2 families in Verona. They were Montague and Capulet. Romeo, whom Leonardo DiCaprio plays, was one of the Montagues, and Juliet, whom Claire Danes plays, was one of the Caplet. First, some people of the Montagues and some people of the Capulets in downtown. There were Benvolio who was a cousin of Romeo, and Tybalt who was a cousin of Juliet. They fought each other by using their guns. 2 families had fought for a long time. It was third war, so police men warned 2 families. Romeo discouraged in his romance while they fought in downtown. He liked a woman. She was very beautiful, but his wish didn’t have come true, so he felt perplexed at the result alone at a beach. Benvolio came there, and he consoled Romeo.
One day, the Caplets held a big party. The people welcomed everyone except the Montagues. The Montagues have known that, but Mercutio who was one of the Montague asked Romeo, Bevolio and others. They took part in the party. Romeo was passed a philter by Mercutio before they went to the party. They had to wear masks because they had not to come out their identity. By the way, Juliet was introduced Dave Paris as her fiancé at the party, but she was not interested in him. Romeo and Juliet met the rest room. He threw his mask to wake up. There was an aquarium between men’s and women’s. Romeo and Juliet stared fixedly each other. They didn’t know their identities each other this time, but they realized later. Nevertheless, they fell in love.
When the Montague went home by a car, Romeo got out of the car, and he went to Carplet’s house. The company was shocked at his action, so they left there without Romeo. Romeo climbed a wall, and he sneaked into the house. There was a big pool and some building for the Carplets. He was looking for Juliet’s room, and then Juliet came to the pool. She murmured about Romeo. She thought that parentage was not important in romance. They met there, and kiss. They also promised marriage, so Romeo visited to Father Laurence to make amends before. Father Laurence opposed this marriage first, but he agreed with him late because he thought this marriage might stop struggles between the Montagues and the Caplets. By the way, Juliet talked over with her nurse. She recognized that Romeo was good and agreed with this marriage. Romeo stopped fighting with the Caplet because of this marriage.
One day, the Montagues had a good time on the beach. Then, Tybalt and others came here, and picked a quarrel with Romeo, but he said to him he liked Tybalt, so he could not fight with Tybalt. Tybalt was scared of him because he was different from the previous him. Tybalt violated Romeo, but Romeo didn’t resist him. Mercutio was shocked at Romeo, so he resisted Tybalt. Tybalt stuck him by his knife. He died on the beach with saying curse the Montagues and the Caplet. Romeo sobbed with grief, so he chased Tybalt’s car. Romeo’s car collided Tybalt’s car, and Romeo shot Tybalt. He died on the street. Romeo stood in a daze, but he ran away to Father Laurence. Romeo was sentenced of banishment, so Father Laurence set him free and told him to leave from this town until next day. He also promised marriage of Romeo and Juliet someday, so he was going to obey his advice.
Romeo visit to Juliet. She was sad because Tybalt was killed by Romeo. He met her because he was banished, so he could not meet her for a long time. They were waiting while they could marry. After he left there, Juliet’s father required her to marry Paris. If she would not marry him, she had to leave her house. She refused this engagement, but no one stood for her. Then, she visited Father Laurence, and then he gave her a drug. It was a poison; however, it didn’t kill her really. It stopped only pulses and breathes during 24 hours. Everyone would believe she passed away, but she could wake up after 24 hours. She could run away to Romeo. He informed Romeo about this plan by an express letter, and then this plan was executed.
Juliet’s funeral was performed. Everyone cried. But one of the Montagues who was a friend of Romeo’s saw this funeral, and then he misunderstood she passed away really. He informed Romeo who lived in another town. Romeo was sad, and he went back hastily without reading the letter. He thought he would kill himself by a poison because he believed she passed away really, and he got it with running a risk. Then he arrived at next to Juliet. He talked her again and again, and gave her an engage ring. She moved faintly, but he didn’t notice, and drunk down the poison. He died. Then Juliet woke up ironically, and she realized he was died. She cried and killed herself by his gun. This result was the curse which Mercutio said.
This movie’s result is sad, but I like this movie. I can not say words, but this movie is excellent! It was easy for me to watch it because it was modern. The clothes and hair styles were modern. I think Shakespeare is great because his stories are still very famous.
